BETHESDA, Md., May 14, 2026 — Former Governor Parris Glendening, who served as Governor of Maryland from 1995 to 2003, today announced his endorsement of Drew Morrison in the race for District 1 on the Montgomery County Council. Governor Glendening noted Morrison’s unique record on environmental issues as the reason for the Governor’s endorsement today.
“As the federal government turns its back on the future of our planet, Drew will bring a new generation of leadership to the Montgomery County Council to protect the environment and combat climate change,” said Governor Glendening. “He has shaped transformative green policies at the County and the State level, from drafting the legislation that created the Montgomery County Green Bank to working to pass statewide legislation to advance transit-oriented development. He will bring this experience to critical challenges ahead so that Montgomery County remains at the forefront of environmental action.”
Governor Glendening’s endorsement adds to a growing list of endorsements for Morrison, including former Governor Martin O’Malley, former Attorney General Doug Gansler, District 7 Councilmember Dawn Luedtke, former District 1 Councilmember Roger Berliner, and former At-Large Councilmember Nancy Floreen. Morrison’s full endorsement list is available here.
Morrison highlighted what Governor Glendening’s endorsement means for the campaign.
“I am honored to have Governor Glendening’s support,” Morrison said. “As Governor, he helped Maryland take major steps forward on the environment, creating generational commitments to protect the Chesapeake Bay, reduce sprawl, embrace smart, transit-oriented development, and clean our air. I promise to be an effective climate champion on the Council, following in the footsteps of leaders like Governor Glendening.”
Governor Parris Glendening served on the Hyattsville City Council before being elected to two terms on the Prince George’s County Council, starting in 1974. On the Council, he twice served as Council President. He later became the first County Executive to serve three terms. He was Governor of Maryland from 1995 and 2003. As Governor, Glendening took a leading role in advancing causes around the environment and conservation. After his public service, he joined Smart Growth America and worked with local leaders to craft policies to promote transit, reduce environmental impacts, and support walkable, livable communities.
