On Minneapolis and Maryland

In the past two weeks, the killings of Alex Pretti and Renée Good in Minneapolis have shocked all of us.

Closer to home, we learned just this week the federal government has purchased a building in Hagerstown to house an immigrant detention facility, and we’ve seen deeply concerning reports about the current Baltimore Holding Facility. In Montgomery County and the DC region, too many hard-working, longtime residents have faced deportation and their families have been ripped apart even when they were following guidance from immigration officials that they thought would keep them in this country.

When you’re the son of an immigration attorney, you learn some things about the value of people and of the law. Today’s immigrants were already caught in the middle of a broken system. That was the case before Donald Trump, Stephen Miller, and Greg Bovino began terrorizing immigrants in our community and around the country.

The knowledge and experience I have gained through watching this system up close has armed me with an understanding of how to stand up for the law, due process, and the dignity of all of our neighbors.

As a Councilmember, I will work alongside Attorney General Anthony Brown and leaders across Maryland to protect the rule of law, fight back against ICE’s reckless operations, and protect our community.
